For the past 20 years, Researcher Paul R. KATZ has continued his research on Taoism and folk religion, which began with his doctoral dissertation, while constantly exploring new research areas. Additionally, throughout his academic research, he has consistently engaged in fieldwork, combining historical data and field research in his writings. His research journey started with topics in the Jiangsu and Zhejiang regions of China’s southeast coast and expanded to the Taiwan area.

His doctoral dissertation focused on the belief in Wen Qiong (Marshal Wen), tracing the origins of the Wangyeh belief in Taiwan and examining the mutual influences between Taoism and local folk beliefs. After conducting long-term research in Donggang Town, Pingtung County, and other sacred sites of the Wangyeh belief in Taiwan, he published the Chinese version of “The Belief of Wangyeh in Taiwan”(《台灣的王爺信仰》)in 1997.

In recent years, his research has centered on the interplay between religion and the judiciary, particularly the judicial rituals in Han Chinese society. Judicial rituals refer to ceremonies where people, unable to determine the right or wrong or guilt or innocence of a party, turn to deities belonging to the underworld judiciary system, such as the City God, Emperor Dongyue, Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, and Ta-chung Ye (Lord of the Hordes), to adjudicate disputes.
